Q: How many years have you been operating cranes, and what got you into the trade?
I have been working in the crane and heavy lifting industry for 39 years, with 23 of those years running my own business. I woke up one morning and simply decided this was the trade I wanted to master, and I've been dedicated to it ever since.

Q: Why did you decide to work as an independent, freelance operator rather than staying with a corporate fleet?
Previously, I worked for a large fleet company that set fixed prices and strict structures that I wasn't always happy with. When the opportunity arose to strike out on my own, supported by my employer at the time, I took it. Working independently allows me to give my clients direct, flexible, and fair value-for-money service with complete personal accountability.

Q: What is your background or operating area across Dorset and the wider UK?
I have worked extensively across Dorset and right across the UK on a wide variety of commercial and domestic crane hire jobs. I also spent 4 years managing complex lifts on busy, crowded sites in central London. While I no longer operate inside London, that high-pressure experience means there is virtually no site constraint or tricky access issue I haven't successfully handled.

Q: What is your personal philosophy regarding safety and handling high-value goods?
I treat every load with the utmost seriousness and care. My daily work involves handling expensive machinery, structural steel, and high-value customer cargo. In my 39-year on-site career, I maintain a 100% safety record—not a single piece of client goods has ever been damaged on my watch.
Q: What enjoyments do you get from working directly with local site managers, builders, and homeowners?
The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the genuine smile on a client's face when the lift is completed cleanly, safely, with zero hassle, and usually much faster than they anticipated

Q: How do you prepare for a job to ensure a safe and smooth lift?
Every lift is thoroughly planned. First, I obtain exact dimensions and weights of the article, checking whether it requires specialized lifting eyes or web slings. Next, I conduct a full site assessment, inspecting ground conditions, elevation heights, swing radius, and the landing zone. Back at the office, I cross-reference this data against precise weight and angle charts to ensure the operation is executed with absolute safety and efficiency.
Q: How do you ensure projects stay on schedule and avoid costly site delays?

Punctuality and preparation are everything. If a job is scheduled to start at 8:00 AM, I arrive on site by 7:30 AM. Furthermore, all loads, rigging, and equipment are checked and fully secured on the vehicle the day prior so we hit the ground running the moment site doors open.
